Used with permission from the ASCC website: Our scenic golf course in Alta Sierra makes the perfect setting for country club golf: lush trees in a picturesque setting, a fun round, plus plenty of variety. Every hole has a distinctive character, making this the ideal place to consider if you're looking for a club to call home. We do welcome some visitors, because ours is a semi-private club that allows a certain amount of public play. Generally, the course is reserved for members and guests before noon. A limited amount of starting times are available to the public in the afternoon. Alta Sierra opened as an 18-hole course in 1964 and was the design of Bob E. Baldock and Jim Summers. Baldock is known for creating literally dozens of courses throughout California. Here the designers used the natural landscape skillfully in creating fairways and greens that meander among majestic pines and black oaks. You'll eagerily anticipate what's coming next on this course, because no hole repeats what you've seen before. As you stand on the next tee box, it will be a clever change, every time. From the very beginning you're going to decide that this is a fun course. On our par-5 opener (497 yards from the back and 411 from the front), you need to fire from an elevated tee through a chute of evergreens while carefully controlling your distance. It's possible for a long hitter to reach the green in two, but the first shot has to negotiate a creek, 270 yards away that runs diagonally across the fairway. If you're short of the creek, you'll probably have to lay up, then hit to an elevated green that's very deep. No. 2 is considered the most difficult hole on the course. It's a par-4, 444 yards from the back and 294 from the front. It's long and it's uphill. There's a lot to chew on as far as length. It's relatively narrow and the fairway runs through the tall pines, an errant tee shot can make this hole a difficult one. The 9th is one of the most interesting par-4s on the course, a slight dogleg left downhill measuring 402 yards from the back and 273 from the front. If your tee shot travels too far, you can get into a whole scenario of problems, including difficulties with trees on the left and right. On your second shot, you're hitting downhill to a green that looks as if it's sloping from back to front, but the green is actually level. It's something of an optical illusion. As you take on the second half of the course, you'll face a great hole, the par-4 dogleg left No. 10, measuring 384 yards from the back and 250 from the front. Favor the right side with your tee shot. You're heading uphill, so from the tee hit as far as you can to get a close as possible to the green. That's so that you have the best angle for your shot to the green, a tiered surface that slopes from back to front toward the fairway. The back nine is famous for its outstanding par-3s, including the 12th (142 yards from the back and 135 from the front). Standing on the elevated tee box, you're hitting down to a postage stamp green with a large pond to the right and rear of the green. This is a short but very picturesque, challenging hole. It's especially beautiful in the fall when the liquid ambers and maples are changing color. The scenic dogleg right 13th is a favorite par-4 (351 yards from the back and 329 from the front) with its stands of pines and oaks. All the way along, you're surrounded by trees. Your second shot really has to be in a good location. Keep your tee shots to the left side, leaving the proper angle for your approach to the green. The green is small and fairly flat, but protected by a bunker on the right side as you approach. Distances, ratings and slopes at Alta Sierra CC range from 4,975 yards (68.7/121) to 6,326 (70.8/130) through four sets of tees.
